Children who are restricted in any of the listed DTC “basic activities of daily living” categories (described in our case studies in this section) can qualify for the DTC as well. There is not age limit for this program, where young and old can qualify. The key difference is that children’s claims can qualify for two additional benefits. The first is the “Supplemental Amount” which generally adds another $1,000 per year in potential benefits, for each year the child has been under 18 years of age. When added to the regular “Disability Amount” (of $2,000 on average), children’s claims can amount to as much as $3,000 per year for each of the last 10 years (the maximum past years allowed). The total benefit for a 10 year claim for children can total $30,000 for past years (based on a 10 year claim), and additional amounts for future years.
The second additional benefit for children’s claims is the Child Disability Benefit. This additional benefit is automatically allowed if the DTC claim is approved for children (for years under 18 years old). Unlike the DTC however, this is not an income tax credit/benefit, rather it is an independent benefit not based on income taxes paid. It is based on income level however, where the lower the family annual income the higher the benefit, though on average it can amount to $2,000 more benefit per year, or $20,000 for a 10 years claim. In this case, the $20,000 added to the $30,000 DTC benefit, means families can benefit up to $50,000 in a lump sum amount (and more for future years).
So this means that there is a $20,000 potential for an adults 10-year claim, and a $50,000 potential for a child’s 10-year claim. These are tax free benefits, and net amounts claimants and their families can expect if they qualify for the DTC, are accurately assessed that they qualify, as well as the total number of years that they qualify, and that their cases are properly presented to them and their doctors, so that their forms are completely accurately and as required and their claims are justly approved.
